LMTV #249: Pain Management Made Easy (Kerryn van der Merwe)
As we go through our daily lives, it is inevitable that something will happen that will lead to some form of pain. For some of us, however, pain can actually become a chronic condition that is difficult to manage. Consider the following statistics:
• Approximately 50 million adults in the United States suffer from chronic pain;
• Around 19.6 million adults experience high-impact chronic pain, which is pain that frequently limits life or work activities;
• Lower back pain is the most common type of pain, affecting about 31 million Americans at any given time;
• More than 38 million people in the U.S. suffer from migraines;
• Arthritis affects over 54 million adults in the United States, with osteoarthritis being the most common form;
• Neuropathy affects about 20 million people in the U.S., with diabetic neuropathy being one of the most common types.
• Cancer pain is experienced by a significant portion of the approximately 1.9 million new cancer cases diagnosed each year in the U.S; furthermore, about 30-50% of patients undergoing cancer treatment experience pain, and 70-90% of those with advanced cancer suffer extreme pain.
These statistics—available from reputable sources such as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Chiropractic Association, Arthritis Foundation, American Cancer Society, and many others—highlight the widespread impact of different types of pain on the American population and underscore the importance of accessible and effective pain management solutions.
